Training
     A Process Group for Psychotherapists

Rarely do therapists have the opportunity to do their own work in a group therapy setting.

  • Beginning in January, 2012, I will be offering a training group in group therapy, for therapists who want to deepen their personal and professional growth. The group will combine an experiential process group with instruction and analysis of group dynamics. Find out for yourself why group therapy is one of the most effective modalities we therapists can offer.

  • In group, the issues are no longer remote. In whatever ways those issues show up for you in your life, they will show up in group. The difference, of course, is that when they show up in group, you have direct access to them while still in the linked affective state. And as we know from our clinical experience, there's a big difference between talking about an issue and dealing with it as it's happening. Talking about brings insight. Direct access brings change.

  • Here is the chance to both experience the power of group therapy yourself and begin to learn the skills of group leadership. The group will meet for 2 hours. The first 1½ hours will be spent in the process group, where the work is done in the "here and now" of the session. The last ½ hour we will step out of process and look at the group dynamics. Here is the chance to learn about

    • Group agreements,

    • Curative factors of group therapy,

    • Boundaries and how they impact the group function,

    • Cohesion building in group,

    • Stages of group development,

    • Group norms and roles,

    • Resistance, transference and countertransference in group,

    • Group-as-a-whole process,

    • Tasks, functions, roles of the group therapist,

    • Style and voice of the leader,

    • Ethical issues that arise in group.

  • Training is essential for the therapist who wants to incorporate the power of group therapy into his or her practice. And for training in group psychotherapy to be relevant, the process must be experienced first-hand. This group will offer you an immersion experience combined with instruction by a skilled group leader.

  • My theoretical model for group is relational. In relational therapy there is an acknowledgement that everyone in the room, including the therapist, contributes to the interpersonal dynamic. As a relational therapist I am active and engaged, rather than aloof and assessing. The matrix we form together becomes an environment of growth and healing. Feel free to ask me more about how I conduct groups.

  • I have been leading therapy groups since 1986. I am a Certified Group Psychotherapist and Board Member of the International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists. My experience also includes leading workshops and training institutes at the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) annual meetings. In 2012, I will be team leader and instructor of the Principles of Group Psychotherapy Core Course, which is a prerequisite for becoming a Certified Group Psychotherapist. • Membership boundaries are significant in any process group. However, in a training group they are necessarily different from those in a therapy group. I will screen for multiple relationships that would otherwise make work in group unsafe.

  • Confidentiality is essential in this group, as it is in therapy groups. You will be asked to agree to keep any information you learn in group within the group. Every member needs to know that their personal work and professional vulnerability is protected by the group.
